Shravan Somvar (Sawan Monday)
Shravan Somvar are the Mondays of the sacred Shravan month (July-August in the Gregorian calendar) — considered the most spiritually charged Mondays of the year for Shiva worship. Millions of devotees called Kanwariyas walk barefoot to collect Ganga jal and offer it at Shiva temples during this month. Observing all 4-5 Shravan Somvars is believed to grant any pure wish. Combined with Shivratri (falls in Shravan), this is Shaivism's most active month.
🔔 Puja Vidhi
- Bathe at Brahma Muhurta, wear saffron or white
- Perform Rudra Abhishek with panchamrit and Ganga jal
- Offer bilva leaves (108 or 1000 depending on intensity)
- Chant Maha Mrityunjaya mantra 108 times
- Fast completely till evening; single meal after sunset puja
- Visit a Shiva temple; those in northern India often join the Kanwariya pilgrimage
📜 Rules
- Complete abstinence from onion, garlic, non-vegetarian food during Shravan month
- Green bangles and mehendi are traditional for women during Shravan
- Sleeping on the floor and speaking only truth adds to the merit
