Krishna Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna at midnight on the Krishna Ashtami of Bhadrapada in Rohini nakshatra. Devotees fast from sunrise, perform Krishna abhishek at midnight (Nishita Kaal — the exact birth muhurat), sing bhajans through the night, and break fast after midnight puja. Second day includes Dahi Handi celebrations — pyramid-forming to break curd pots hung high, recreating young Krishna's butter-stealing pranks.
🔔 Puja Vidhi
- Full fast from sunrise (or phalahari)
- Decorate Krishna cradle with flowers, peacock feathers
- Midnight puja: bathe Krishna idol in panchamrit, dress in fresh yellow
- Offer 56 bhog (chappan bhog) if resources allow
- Sing bhajans; recite Bhagavad Gita chapter 15
- Break fast after midnight aarti with prasad
