Ahoi Ashtami

Ahoi Ashtami is a nirjala vrat observed by mothers for the well-being, long life, and prosperity of their children. Falls on the Krishna Ashtami of Kartik (4 days before Karva Chauth). The fast is broken only after sighting stars (traditionally the tail of Ursa Major — Saptarishi Mandal). Mothers offer to Ahoi Mata and pray for children of all ages — from newborns to grown adults.

🔔 Puja Vidhi

Bathe at sunrise, wear red or pink
Fast completely from sunrise (nirjala or with only water)
Evening: draw Ahoi Mata figure on a wall or paper with the seven sons and one daughter (traditional icon)
Offer wheat kheer, halwa, and singhare-atta puri
Recite Ahoi Ashtami Katha with other mothers
Break fast after sighting stars (or moonrise in some traditions)

Silver Ahoi Mata pendant is often gifted by mothers to daughters-in-law
Number of grains counted equals number of children
Especially observed by mothers of sons (traditional emphasis, though inclusive of daughters today)
