Mars dosha check with cancellation rules and remedies
You are Manglik if Mars occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from your Ascendant (Lagna). The same count is made from your Moon and from Venus — Mars in those houses from all three makes the dosha stronger — but on its own it does not make a chart Manglik. Being Manglik is not automatically a marriage obstacle: about half of all charts have Mars in one of these houses, and classical Jyotisha gives cancellation rules (Mangal Dosha parihara) that neutralise it — Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn), Mars in a sign the texts exempt for that house, Mars joined or aspected by Jupiter, or Mars with the Moon. Any one of them is enough, and when both partners are Manglik the doshas balance each other. Before any wedding decision based on Manglik status, the full chart context must be read — a "yes I'm Manglik" answer alone tells you almost nothing.
Lagna, Moon and Venus: what each reference point does
Mars is counted from your Ascendant (Lagna), and that count decides whether the chart is Manglik. It is also counted from your Moon sign (Chandra Lagna) and from Venus's position: when Mars sits in the 1/2/4/7/8/12 from those as well, the dosha is graded stronger — afflicting from all three reference points is the "strong Manglik" of popular usage. Mars in these houses from the Moon or Venus alone, with the Lagna clear, is not counted as Manglik: taking any of the three as enough would call nearly nine people in ten Manglik.
Cancellation rules that make Manglik status irrelevant
The dosha is cancelled when: (1) Mars is in its own sign (Aries, Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn); (2) Mars is in a sign the parihara verses exempt for its house — the 1st in Aries, Leo or Aquarius, the 2nd in Gemini or Virgo, the 4th in Aries or Scorpio, the 7th in Cancer or Capricorn, the 8th in Cancer, Sagittarius or Pisces, the 12th in Taurus, Libra or Sagittarius; (3) Jupiter is with Mars or aspects it (Jupiter's 5th, 7th or 9th); (4) the Moon is with Mars. Any one of these is enough — each verse says of its own condition that there is no dosha. At matching, both partners being Manglik balances the dosha, as does Saturn or Rahu in the dosha houses of the partner's chart. Age 28, a retrograde or combust Mars, or a strong 7th lord are popular beliefs, not classical cancellations.
