Every Friday — 16 Fridays for a complete vrat cycle

**The Story:** A poor woman had seven sons. The seventh was neglected — his older brothers received first meals, and he ate their leftovers. His wife suffered even more when her husband left to seek fortune. Her in-laws mistreated her, making her sleep near the fireplace and eat their scraps. One Friday, she saw a group of women returning from Santoshi Mata puja. When she asked about it, they explained: fast every Friday, avoid sour foods, and offer gud-chana (jaggery and roasted chana) to Santoshi Mata. Whatever wish is offered will be fulfilled. The woman began the vrat. Week after week she fasted and prayed for her husband\'s safe return. Meanwhile, her husband — in a distant land — kept feeling drawn homeward but could not explain why. On the 12th Friday, he had wealth in hand and set off. He arrived on a Friday, exhausted and grateful. She rejoiced. But her jealous sisters-in-law arranged a feast serving sour dishes (a violation of the vrat). She refused. They tricked her by hiding sour tamarind in her plate. She unknowingly ate it — breaking her vrat. Santoshi Mata was displeased. Her husband\'s wealth vanished; misfortune returned. Realizing what happened, the woman performed the vrat again with full purity for 12 more weeks — this time keeping strict rules. Santoshi Mata blessed them: prosperity returned, they had a son, and lived in joy. **Ritual:** Fast every Friday. No sour food (no tamarind, lemon, yogurt) for the vrat-observer or the family that day. Offer gud-chana as prasad. Recite this katha. Do not lend gud-chana to anyone (it must be consumed at home). Perform 16 consecutive Fridays for udyapan.
