Maharashtra Festivals

Maharashtra follows the Amanta calendar. Gudi Padwa marks the Marathi New Year. Ganesh Chaturthi — thanks to Lokmanya Tilak in 1893 — became a public 10-day movement, with millions immersing idols in the sea on Anant Chaturdashi. Gokulashtami's Dahi Handi is uniquely Maharashtrian, and Pandharpur Wari draws millions of Warkaris on foot.
